Paleohora was once a tranquil fishing village but is now a popular holiday resort. Set on a narrow peninsular it has a long narrow curving sandy beach which is exposed on one side but has a sheltered pebbly beach to the other. On summer evenings the main street closes to traffic to be taken over by tavernas. The remains of a 13th century Venetion castle provide splendid views of the sea and mountains. The most picturesque parts of the town are the narrow streets around the castle.

On the morning of 6th of July, in 1997, I stepped on a plane and flew to Chania, Crete. It was my 25th birthday and to celebrate it I had booked a holiday of 3 weeks to Paleohora, at that time a new resort on the southwest coast of Crete. It was to be my first trip abroad totally alone and I was very exited. I had a small crisis about turning to 25 as it was a quarter of a century and I was feeling so old. otherwise I was happy and a bit hilarious too. Not because of the champagne I had on the plane but things were going well for me. I had graduated to a profession that spring, I had found my first real job and a new life in a new town was waiting for me when I returned after having had the holiday of my life.
We arrived to Chania before noon and the bus to Paleohora was waiting for me and other travellers. The journey to Paleohora took almost three hours but the scenery from the bus windows was excellent. Paleohora is a little village on a narrow peninsula. It has great beaches on both sides, big sandy beach on one side and small pebble beach on the other. The village in between was very lively. It was hard to believe that there were less than 2500 permanent inhabitants. During the summers these numbers multiplied. Paleohora really got to me instantly. It was a dreamlike place. I couldn't help feeling a bit romantic and nostalgic. and the first evening was more of a dramatic one.
