church on the causway |
Just off the main north coast highway lies Georgioupoli, basking in the sun beside a beach of golden sand.A colourful fishing fleet bobs at anchor at the mouth of a small river and out on a causeway stands the tiny whitewashed chapel of St.Nicholas...
Georgioupoli was named after Prince George, son of the King of Greece. The area is renowned for its bird life and the Almiros river flows into the sea at this point. The marsh area at the mouth of the river is a haven for birds, freshwater crabs, terrapins, frogs and fish. Kingfishers are regularly observed in this area. The Almiros is also known as turtle river and river boat trips operate to search the reeded river banks. Georgioupoli is situated at the western edge of a long beach stretching 12km in the direction of Rethymno. Another feature of Georgioupoli is the avenue of giant Eucalyptus trees on the old road out of the village.
